In a tightly packed finish, the future Tar Heel ran a 1:14.7 to trail only Walter Kirkland (Mount Vernon/1:13), Peter Spencer (Uniondale/1:14.1), and Dan Denuak (Liverpool/1:14.3) while edging Keith Millsbaugh (Valley Central/1:15.3).
