On this day 37 years ago, Roger Wycoff earned a 6th place finish in the 500 yard freestyle at the New York State Championships in Syracuse.
The future West Pointer earned the highest finish for a Long Island swimmer in 4:53.51 while helping Section XI to a third place finish out of eleven sections. He would go on to win the State Title in the 500 free in 1983. He still holds the school record in the event with a mark of 4:40.40.
