Bears Sink Clippers in Regular Season Finale

February 12, 2018

On Friday night the girls’ basketball team avenged an early season loss as they throttled Southold, 53-32. The win ended a string of eight consecutive defeats to the Clippers whom the Bears last beat in the 2013 County Championship, 56-39.

The Bears won every quarter, including the opening frame as they grabbed early control with a 9-2 lead. The edge grew to ten at the half and swelled to 16 heading into the fourth quarter as the Brook never relinquished control.

Beth Felix led the way with 30 points (six 3-pointers), 7 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Danielle Graves (10 points/5 rebounds), Jessica Nwachukwu (6 points/8 rebounds), Leka Lee-Maeba (6 points/9 rebounds), and Bri Kilkenny (1) rounded out the scoring attack. Felix finishes the regular season ranked 8th on the Suffolk scoring list at 21.1 ppg and 1st on Long Island in 3-pointers (56).

The Bears closed the league season at 6-8, narrowly missing the .500 threshold needed to automatically qualify for the Class C playoffs. However, the Bears’ 4-4 record again C schools, a 49-45 victory over Pierson, and close losses to Mattituck (14-0), Mercy (12-2), and Babylon (9-5) may be enough to allow them in on an appeal. Section XI’s seeding committee meets tomorrow morning to determine the Bears’ postseason fate.
