The 1975 boys’ basketball squad
On this day 43 years ago, the boys’ basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season in a 62-58 victory over Poly Prep.
The Shrikes held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but their old Brooklyn rivals came storming back to within 55-52 with 1:30 remaining. With the Brook in need of a big play, Tony Fort came up with a steal and score to stem the tide. Dan McNeill followed with a bucket off of an offensive rebound to seal the win.
Jerry Britton was huge under the basket, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 boards despite giving up two inches of height to Poly’s 6’5″ twin towers. Steve Crawford led the Shrikes with 14 points while Fort and Andy Barber each dropped in 10. McNeill and Robin Cook combined for 11 assists.
The Shrikes would go on to finish 15-2 and win a second consecutive League Championship in Thom Brownworth’s first of fifteen seasons at the helm.
