Yesterday afternoon, the girls’ basketball team rolled Port Jeff, 55-41, in a game that was not as close as the double-digit margin would indicate.

The Royals jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Beth Felix responded with 11 straight points to give the Blue and White a lead they would never relinquish. She bookended the spurt with a 3-pointer and an and-1, and in between displayed her multi-faceted attack, scoring with a spin move in the lane, on a tough layup through traffic, and from the free throw line. A Port Jeff layup broke the string of points, but after a Jessica Nwachukwu steal, Caroline Maglione used the glass on a short jumper and Niamh Scanlon beat the buzzer with a putback to give the Brook a 15-6 edge after one.

Port Jeff closed to within 16-9 early in the second frame, but Nwachukwu hit a baseline jumper to ignite a 13-3 run that left the Bears up 29-12 at the break. The scoring stretch was punctuated by a Danielle Graves 3-pointer and a hard-fought layup from Wura Obasanjo.

The Bears extended the lead early in the second half, using a 12-2 run to push their advantage to an insurmountable 41-15 behind ten points from Felix, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to give her 25 points through three quarters. In the fourth, coach Tim Stone substituted liberally as the Bears closed out the win.

Felix grabbed 8 of the team’s 10 steals and led all scorers with 31 points, the second time she’s topped the 30-mark this season along with a 33-point outburst vs. Mercy on December 20. She is currently 9th on the Suffolk County scoring list at 22.8 points per game. Graves (7 points), Obasanjo (4), Scanlon (4), Maglione (4), Nwachukwu (3), and Leka Lee-Maeba (2) rounded out the scoring. Nwachukwu, Obasanjo, and Lee-Maeba were terrors underneath all night, scrapping for rebounds and gritty finishes that helped set the tone for the Brook.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday in a league match-up at Babylon.
