Crane after finishing the Mighty Hamptons Tri in September

On Sunday morning, Head of School Joshua Crane finished first in his age group and 16th overall in a field of 90 competitors at the HITS Olympic Triathlon in Naples, FL.

Crane fought off uncharacteristically cold temperatures in the Sunshine State that saw frozen iguanas falling from trees and manatees huddling for warmth throughout last week’s icy spell. He took the victory in the 45-49 age group after completing the 1500-meter swim, 24.8 mile bike ride, and 6.2 mile run in a total time of 2:33:19, besting the field by nearly ten minutes.

Crane led the way after the first stage of the event, covering the 1500 meter swim at Vanderbilt Beach in 25:43.4 to take a 2+ minute edge. He extended that lead with the quickest transition into the bike stage where he scorched the 24.8 mile ride in 1:12:27 to push his advantage to eleven minutes. In the final leg he turned in the fourth fastest run in the field (49:56.4) to seal his victory and drop nine minutes off of his previous mark.

This was Crane’s fourth race in two years of competition. He anticipates hitting the course again in April before competing several times over the summer.
