Vaughn Leads Bears Past Kew-Forest
Yesterday evening the boys’ basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 53-45 victory over The Kew-Forest School in the opening round of the Portledge Tip-Off Tournament.
The Bears fell behind 7-11 after the first quarter and still trailed at halftime for the first time all season after a frenetic 18-18 second quarter. The Jaguars’ speedy point guard torched the Bears for all 18 of his team’s points in the frame as Kew carried a four-point lead into the half.
The Bears came out with renewed energy after the break and won the third frame, 13-9, to enter the fourth quarter knotted at 38-38. Andy D’Alessio came off the bench to bury the team’s only 3-pointer of the game and play some spirited defense on the Jaguars’ point guard. The Blue and White defense was clutch down the stretch, limiting the Jaguars to 7 points over the final eight minutes as the Bears pulled out the win.
Emil Vaughn played masterful defense, limiting the Jaguar point guard to just 3 second half points and zero field goals. He also paced the Bears offensively with a career-high 19 points to go along with 6 assists. James Toney (14 pts/ 12 rebs), Jai Narain (8 pts), Seamus Scanlon (4 pts), Rex Eshirow (3 pts), Andy D’Alessio (3 pts), and Owen Sobel (2 pts) rounded out a balanced scoring attack. In three games this season three different Bears have led the team in scoring: Scanlon (17 vs. Shelter Island), Toney (28 vs. Southold), and Vaughn (19).
The Brook is back in action on Sunday morning in the final vs. Portledge. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday morning but was moved due to the impending snow.
