Toney Spurs Bears Past Danes

December 6, 2017

In the annual early season scrimmage with Hjemly Idrætsefterskole of Denmark, the Bears rode their patented high-energy, pressure defense to a 77-53 victory. It is the fourth straight year the boys have beaten Hjemly to go along with wins in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Seamus Scanlon provided the Bears’ first points, foreshadowing the frenetic defense they would exert all afternoon with a steal and layup in the opening seconds. It was the first of 7 steals for the Brook in the opening frame and of the 21 they would force in the game. After Hjemly took a narrow 5-6 lead, the Bears closed the quarter on a 16-5 run, powered by James Toney’s 8 points including a layup at the buzzer off a baseline out of bounds play that gave the Brook a 21-11 edge.

Toney continued his torrid scoring pace in the second quarter as he dropped in the Bears’ first 7 points of the frame on a steal and layup, a 3-pointer, and a runner that gave them their biggest lead to that point, 28-13. The Danes chipped their deficit back to 11, but an Antonio Rizzo 3-pointer in the closing seconds gave the Brook a 39-23 advantage at the break. Toney’s halftime line was a gaudy 21 points, 3 steals, 1 block.

Toney continued to be the offensive catalyst for the Bears, again scoring their first 7 points of the quarter on a layup, 3-pointer, and pull-up jumper that pushed the lead to 18. Hjemly responded with a quick 7-2 spurt, but back-to-back jumpers by Jai Narain put the Bears back up by 18. Hjemly closed the third with a 3-pointer in the waning seconds to trail 38-53 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hjemly opened the frame with a pair of free throws to cut their deficit to 13, but they would get no closer as the Bears saw their lead mushroom to as much as 30 behind five 3-pointers by Seamus Scanlon (2), Colin Scanlon, Owen Sobel, and Narain. The Danes continued to fight, and closed the game on a 10-4 run.

Toney powered the Bears with 28 points while Seamus Scanlon added 13. The Bears are back in action this afternoon in a non-league match-up at Southold.
