The boys’ basketball team continued its hot start to the season by topping Hjemly Idrætsefterskole (Denmark) in a scrimmage yesterday afternoon, 52-43.

The Bears got out of the gates quickly, hitting three 3-pointers in the opening frame off the fingers of Mac Bohuny (2) and Harry Zhu. The Bears’ defensive pressure, which yielded five steals and two blocks in the quarter, kept the Danes off-balance for most of the frame, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer brought Hjemly within 15-10 after the first.

The Danes surged in the second quarter and briefly took a 21-18 lead after a 10-2 run, but a gritty bucket inside from John Eshirow and a Luke O’Connor trifecta gave the Brook a 23-21 edge at the half. The Bears went airborne in the second frame, recording four blocks including emphatic rejections from Bohuny and O’Connor.

A five-point run to open the second half gave the Danes a 26-23 advantage, but a layup from O’Connor, a hook shot from Jyles Etienne, and two free throws from Brandon Providence allowed the Bears to retake a 29-26 lead. Over the final minutes of the third period, a frenetic pace would yield three ties and three lead changes. After the dust settled, Hjemly remained on top, carrying a 35-34 lead into the decisive fourth quarter.

On the opening possession of the fourth, the Bears lost control of the ball and a mad scrum ensued as Etienne sent his 6′ 5″ frame diving across the floor for the loose ball. Though the Blue and White would lose possession of the ball, that play defined the fight the Bears would show over the final eight minutes. Etienne scored the first four points for the Bears on a layup and a pair of free throws to take a 38-35 lead, but the Danes would respond on the next possession with a 3-pointer to knot the game again. It looked as though the contest was headed for a tense finish, but Providence ignited a 12-0 run with a floater and two free throws that would seal the win for the Brook. After Providence’s four-point spurt, Eshirow followed with a tough layup inside, O’Connor drilled a 3-pointer, Etienne finished a layup through contact, and Eshirow connected on two free throws. The Danes would score the next four points to get within eight with under two minutes to play, but two free throws from Providence sealed their fate, giving the Bears the 52-43 win. Though it was only a scrimmage, the energy brought by both sides was impressive.

Etienne led the Brook with 12 points. Providence added 10 big points, all in the second half. The balanced scoring attack continued with O’Connor (9), Bohuny (6), Eshirow (6), Zhu (5), Kayonga (2), and Vaughn (1).

After yesterday’s scrimmage, the Bears will take the floor again on Saturday at Pierson @ 4:00pm in their first league game of the season. It will be a rematch of last year’s County Championship which the Bears took, 44-39.
