Harrigan in the Coaches Meet earlier this season

Yesterday afternoon on a cold and blustery day at Sunken Meadow State Park, the girls’ cross country team finished 2nd in the Division IV Championship.

Miranda Harrigan led the way with a 21st place overall finish in 22:15, good enough for 4th in Division IV. Sarah Wong (73rd/23:46), Vivien Mimura (77th/23:53), Judy Tao (143rd/26:25), and Erika Kady (159th/27:07) rounded out the scoring for the Brook. Their team score of 80 points topped Hampton Bays (84), Port Jeff (95), Southampton (97), and Pierson (100), and left them behind only Center Moriches (47), a class C team. More importantly, though they did not compete in the same race, the Bears turned in a significantly better average time than Shelter Island, their main competition in next week’s Suffolk County Class D Championship. The Bears’ average individual time of 24:41 eclipsed the islanders’ 25:15. The two squads will face off next Friday in a rematch of a thrilling regular season meet which Shelter took by a point.

On the boys’ side, the Bears finished 3rd out of seven teams, led by Riley Corcoran’s personal record time. The sophomore rookie tied for 10th overall in a time of 18:28, crushing his previous best mark of 19:02 on the challenging Sunken Meadow course. Additionally he was the Division IV runner-up. Louis Wang (69th/19:36), Joe Georgiou (132nd/20:53), Emmanuel Ajewole (133rd/20:54), and Josh Lin (136th/20:59) rounded out the scoring for the Brook. Their team total of 64 gave them the edge over Pierson (84), Hampton Bays (137), Babylon (145), and Southold (167), and left them behind only the larger schools of Mattituck (47) and John Glenn (59).

Both squads return to Sunken Meadow next Friday for the Suffolk County Championships.
