Petersen & Graves elevate for a block vs. Mercy earlier this season (PC: Michael Cao)

Yesterday afternoon the volleyball squad swept Greenport/Southold, 3-0, to improve to 7-0 on the season and extend the best start in program history.

The Bears swept the Clippers for the fourth straight time by dominant scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-12 to solidify their position atop League VIII. Sam Petersen, Hannah Detwiler, Danielle Graves, and Lois Ezi each notched 6 kills while Liz Robbins recorded 10 aces.

In their seven matches this year the Bears have won each with a 3-0 sweep. They are approaching the school record of 11 sweeps accomplished by the 2010 squad that finished 13-3 and lost in the Suffolk County Championship. The difference is that the 2010 team had the benefit of 14 league games while this year’s squad only has ten.

The Bears return to action on Saturday in a non-league match at Center Moriches, a League VII team that currently sits at 4-3.

League VIII Standings

  1. Stony Brook – 7-0
  2. Pierson/Bridgehampton – 5-1
  3. Port Jeff – 3-3
  4. Mercy – 2-4
  5. Shelter Island – 2-4
  6. Greenport/Southold – 0-7
