Volleyball Sweeps Mercy

September 16, 2017

On Monday afternoon the girls’ volleyball team topped McGann-Mercy, 3-0, in a match that was tighter than the final score indicated.

The Monarchs were in control for much of game one and held a 15-19 edge before the Bears unleashed a 10-0 run to steal it. The spurt was ignited with a chaotic play that saw Liz Robbins corral a ball that ricocheted off of a basketball hoop, bumping it to Sam Petersen who hit a low arcing winner with her back to the net. From there Robbins served out the game, thanks in large part to her five aces.

In game two the Bears built an early 11-7 edge that they eventually extended to 22-17. However, Mercy showed their mettle by carving into their deficit, unleashing a 7-1 run that left them up 24-23 and in position to steal the game. With their backs against the wall the Bears responded. After a lengthy rally a Lois Ezi kill knotted the game at 24-24. Another long rally, capped by a Danielle Graves kill gave the Bears a brief lead, but the Monarchs scored to tie the game, then put themselves into position to win the game by taking a 26-25 advantage. After the Bears tied it, another Graves kill gave them a 27-26 edge. On the ensuing point, Leslie Kang recorded a fantastic dig that led to a perfect touch shot from Robbins which found hardwood to give the Brook a huge game two victory.

The Bears completed the sweep in game three, despite falling behind early. The Bears righted the ship with a 7-2 run, giving them a 14-10 edge on the way to a 25-17 win. Kang led the way with 25 digs to go along with 3 aces.

Mercy made the Bears work on a day when it didn’t seem like they ever had their offensive rhythm, but great teams know how to win when things aren’t clicking and that’s exactly what the Bears did. With the win they improve to 2-0 on the season.
