Gallery: The Year in Pictures 2016-17

July 1, 2017

The 95th year of Stony Brook athletics was a historic one for the Bears. Three teams placed new banners on the walls of Swanson Gymnasium as the girls’ volleyball team won the first County Championship in program history, the boys’ soccer team won its first League Championship in twelve years, and the boys’ basketball team earned a trip to the program’s first State Final Four.

The badminton teams each set program records for wins in their third season of existence, the baseball team had its best season since 1999, the cross country teams each finished runner-up at the Suffolk County Championships, the boys’ lacrosse team returned to the field for the first time since 2006, and the boys’ tennis team turned in its best season ever in League V.

Individually, Jyles Etienne broke the Suffolk County outdoor (7′ 1.75″) and indoor (7′ 2.5″) high jump records and had the top indoor height in America this season. In the pool, Rachel Crane, Yesenia McKee, Rebecca Crane, and Francine Leung reset the 200 medley relay school record and the Cranes, Leung, and Josie Levy broke the school record in the 400 freestyle relay, both at the Suffolk County Championships. Additionally, individuals on twelve teams qualified for postseason competition in badminton, cross country, golf, swimming, tennis, track, and wrestling.

Yet, far more important than the accomplishments, our student-athletes grew in ways the extend beyond the boundaries of the playing field. They developed virtues, learned lessons, and faced challenges that will not only make them better athletes, but better spouses, parents, friends, and leaders in the years to come. It is this growth that made the 2016-17 year in athletics so successful.
