On this day 42 years ago, Don Lockerbie finished runner-up in the 880 yards at the New York State Championships, losing by a nose to Baldwinsville’s Don Paige and his time of 1:52.9.

Paige would go on to star for Villanova University, winning the 800 and 1500 at the 1979 NCAA Championships. The following year he won the 800 at the US Olympic Trials, but was denied his shot at the Olympics due to the United States’ boycott of the Soviet Union.

Don would later be a collegiate star himself for the University of North Carolina where he became an All-American and the 1980 ACC Champion in the 800 (1:53.1).
