On This Day in History | 2014

On this day three years ago, Charles Tankeh broke the school record in the 100 meters at the New York State Championships.

One week earlier at the Section XI Championships, Tankeh took the Class B county crown in a time of 11.36, a mark that placed him 6th overall in Suffolk. He then followed in the footsteps of Taylor Colucci ’12 by running away with the Class B 200 meter title, completing a rare double victory that Colucci accomplished in 2011.

At the State Championships, Tankeh continued to elevate his performance. Despite lack of practice the previous week due to a slight muscle injury, Tankeh scorched the track in a time of 10.84 that reset Colucci’s school record set in 2012. The time left the sophomore in 1st place after the preliminaries. That same day Tankeh also made the finals of the 200 meters with a mark of 22.53, fifth-fastest in the field.

The following day Tankeh finished in 3rd place in the 100, the highest finish for a sprinter since Colucci won the 200 state title in 2012.
