Hanchett in ’92

On this day 25 years ago, the boys’ lacrosse team successfully defended the Bear Shootout title, adding to their their string of tournament victories from 1990 and 1991.

The Bears topped former Ivy League rivals Horace Mann (11-4) and Poly Prep (9-5) to secure a 3rd straight shootout crown. Leading scorers for the Bears were Alex Radin, Rich Droscoski, freshman Sam Hanchett, and 8th-grader Jake Kenney. The defense was anchored by Chris Gladding, Todd Weiss, Jeremy Linzee, and Nate Carlson.

Alex Radin scored during a man-up situation with four minutes remaining to give host Stony Brook an 8-5 lead in its 9-5 win over Poly Prep (Brooklyn) in the final of the Bear Shootout. Jake Kenney scored three goals in the first half to help Stony Brook take a 5-2 halftime lead.

In the consolation game Jamaica (Queens) built a 7-1 halftime lead in its 11-2 win over Horace Mann (Manhattan). Stony Brook defeated Horace Mann, 11-4, earlier in the first round. Rich Droscoski scored two of his three goals in the first half to help Stony Brook take a 5-2 lead. Sam Hanchett also scored three goals.
