This afternoon the boys’ and girls’ badminton teams registered decisive victories at Northport. For the boys the win solidified their second place position in the league while for the girls it gave them their first victory of the season. The victories were historic, marking the first time the boys’ and girls’ teams earned victories on the same day.

The boys earned a clean 9-0 sweep of the Tigers, dropping just two of the twenty sets played. The five singles winners were David Choi (15-0, 15-4), Haban Weon (15-8, 15-2), Tiger Sun (15-2, 15-1), Jerry Liu (15-0, 15-0), and Kevin Zhang (13-15, 15-4, 15-7). The four doubles teams also earned wins: Ulysses Zhang and Tony Yu (16-17, 15-9, 15-2), David Wang and Jack Yu (15-12, 15-9), Alex Yu and Leo Yang (15-8, 15-9), and Caleb Spreckels and Justin Kim (15-12, 15-1). In just their fifth match of the season, the boys have equaled their cumulative win total from the program’s previous two seasons.

On the girls side, four of the five singles players earned wins while the doubles tandems ran the table to give the Bears an 8-1 victory. Singles players Mary Wang (11-0, 11-1), Maria Volovaya (11-8, 11-0), Ariel Wang (11-3, 11-0), and Lily Ho (11-3, 11-4) earned victories. The doubles teams of Amber Beg and Nancy Man (15-1, 15-2), Lisa Ho and Tina Zhu (15-4, 15-2), Melody Li and Leslie Kang (15-4, 15-0), and Rosemary Wu and Grace Wang (15-2, 15-4) registered wins.

The Bears will try to close out the week with a win as they travel to Patchogue-Medford on Thursday afternoon.
