This afternoon, the boys’ basketball team began their league season with a gritty, 50-36 victory in Sag Harbor over rival Pierson. In a rematch of the last four Suffolk County Championships, the Bears won their sixth straight over the Whalers, a run that includes the last two Class C titles.
The Bears jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter, but the Whalers fought back to win the second frame, 13-12. Pierson further cut into their deficit by winning the third quarter 16-14 to trail by just seven points heading into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, the Bear defense proved to be the difference, holding the Whalers to just three points on the way to a 14-point win and a 4-0 record. It was a physical game that saw one intentional foul assessed to a Pierson player, but our boys maintained their composure and showed tremendous toughness in winning a battle in hostile territory.
Luke O’Connor led the Brook with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Mac Bohuny scored a season-high 12. Jyles Etienne (8 points), Chester Kayonga (7), John Eshirow (5), and Brandon Providence (3) rounded out the scoring for the Blue and White.
With the win, coach Mike Hickey improves his career record vs. Pierson to 35-13 and his all-time record to 298-184, moving within just two victories of the 300-win milestone.
The Bears will attempt to go into the Christmas Break undefeated with a 4:30pm match-up vs. league and Class C rival Southold.
