On this day three years ago, the boys’ basketball team clipped rival Port Jeff, 44-42, on a late 3-pointer from Tyler Abrahamsen.
The Bears held a commanding 13-point lead at halftime, but the Royals battled back to win the third quarter, 15-6, and trail by just two points heading into the fourth.
In a closely contested final frame, Port Jeff took a one-point lead on two free throws with just 33 seconds remaining, leaving the Brook one last chance to win it. Marco Masakayan, who was always at home in the most pressure-packed situations, found Abrahamsen in the right corner with a no-look, bullet pass that pierced Port Jeff’s zone defense. Despite having a defender jumping at him, the senior coolly sank his sixth 3-pointer of the game, giving the Bears a two-point edge with under 10 seconds left. The Royals’ last gasp found only iron and Chase Audige secured the rebound to give the Blue and White a thrilling non-league win.
Abrahamsen finished with a game-high 20 points.
