Our latest project in the Athletic Department is converting old VHS game films into digital files in order to more easily share them with Bear Nation (and Shrike Nation). So many great games have been sitting in a box collecting dust and it’s exciting for us to both preserve them and make them more accessible.
In honor of March Madness, our first offering is one of the greatest games in Stony Brook basketball history. On February 20, 1996 the Bears traveled to Wyandanch for a first round playoff game. Robbie Marvin was nothing short of astounding as he turned in one of the greatest individual performances in Stony Brook playoff history. He scored the Bears’ first 17 points. At one point in the first quarter it was Marvin 17, Wyandanch 11. He scored a Stony Brook playoff record 39 points and hit almost every big shot for the Bears. Almost.
Tied at 66-66 with 10 seconds left, Marvin single-handedly broke the Warrior press and got all the way to the rim, but left it short. Luckily, Paul Ciofone, who scored 18 points, was there for the tip-in at the buzzer for the thrilling win.
Enjoy this Bear Classic.
