The 1948-49 Bruins

On this day 66 years ago, the basketball team clipped Newark Academy (NJ) with a second half comeback in a 54-38 victory.

Trailing 19-24 at the half, the Brook rallied in the third quarter to take a two-point edge heading into the fourth. In the final frame, the Bruins outscored Newark 21-7 to take the win. Johnny Luft’s 21 points and Bob Graham’s 16 paced the Brook.

Under the direction of Floyd Johnson, the 1949 squad would turn in one of the finest seasons in the history of Stony Brook basketball. The boys finished 15-2 and secured the program’s first Ivy League Championship, a feat not repeated until 1957.
