Richie Jones missed the first day of school this year.

Don’t worry. He had a good reason. On August 25th, the eighth grader ended a productive summer of golf by winning the U.S. Kids Tour Championship at Eisenhower Park by a single stroke. It was his third tournament victory of the summer, having already won tournaments at Eisenhower Park on July 28th by two strokes and the Rockaway Hunting Club on August 18th by six strokes.

With his father caddying for him, Richie had one of his best rounds of the summer with a twelve-over, 84. Richie got off to a fast start, shooting a 41 on the front nine, but what Mr. Jones found most impressive was his son’s composure down the stretch. He did his part by keeping Richie’s mind relaxed, directing their conversation to video games and other topics important to twelve-year-olds. Richie responded by parring six of the last seven holes to hold off Thomas Engelke by one stroke, demonstrating tremendous focus and mental fortitude in the process.

With the victory Jones qualified for a number of prestigious events including the PGA Golf Club Invitational in Port St. Lucie, FL (Oct. 10-11), the Monterey Challenge in Monterey, CA (Nov. 8-9), the Holiday Classic in Palm Beach, FL (Dec. 21-22), the Copperhead Classic in Palm Harbor, FL (Jan. 18-19), and the U.S. Kids World Championship on July 31st at the world renowned Pinehurst Golf Resort in North Carolina, host to three U.S. Opens since 1999.
