This afternoon, individuals from the boys’ and girls’ track squads will compete in the Section XI Championships at Port Jefferson High School in the hopes of earning their way to the New York State Championships next weekend. There are two ways an athlete can qualify for States: becoming the County Champion in an individual event or hitting the lofty qualifying standard. Both Khoren Lawson and Taylor Colucci have met the state qualifying mark in the 100 meters with Lawson additionally hitting the mark in the 200 meters. The 4×100 meter relay team has also attained the mark, but the boys are not content with simply moving on to the state meet on the merits of their past performances. They have aspirations of adding another golden chapter to the illustrious history of Stony Brook track and field.
In the 100 meters Lawson, Coluccim\, and sophomore Andrew White have earned the top three seeds in Class B (there are only two classes: A and B). The blistering triumvirate has also garnered the top three seeds in the 200 meters with Colucci supplanting Lawson as the #1 seed. Additionally, the 4×100 meter relay team has the #1 seed in hand and, barring any mishaps, could coast to a County Title. In other events, Jon Wentling is ranked third in the 400 meters and Khoren Lawson, who defeated the top seed in last week’s Division Championships, is ranked second in the triple jump.
On the girls’ side, seventh-grader Rebecca Hollis is ranked third in both the 400 meters and the 400 hurdles. Additionally, freshman Margot Rashba is ranked second in the 3000 meter run and hopes to place a second County Championship plaque beside her cross country title from the fall.
The weather is looking compliant (78° and sunny) for a day that is legendary for its mercurial elements. Hopefully it will be a bright day for other reasons as well.
