On this day 66 years ago, Earl Downey won a pitchers’ duel against St. Paul’s, throwing a no-hitter in a 3-2 win over our Ivy League rivals. St. Paul’s got on the board first, crossing the plate in the 1st and the 4th innings when walks came around to score by way of Stony Brook errors.
In a game that saw just three total hits, the Blue and White twice hit safely in a three-run top of the 5th that vaulted them into a 3-2 lead. From there Downey kept St. Paul’s in check, striking out four over the final three innings, including a 1-2-3 seventh, to secure a victory for the Brook and a memorable milestone for himself. Downey notched 7 strikeouts in the win.
