Whitney in 1979

On this day 32 years ago, All-American Andy Whitney won the two mile run at the prestigious Penn Relays after finishing 7th in the same race one year earlier. Whitney dusted his competitors at Franklin Field in a blazing 9:06.2 to earn the only individual Penn Relays victory in school history.

At the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Andy ran out of the pack on the final lap to capture the invitational two mile run in 9:06.2. With his strong anchor leg, Andy helped to secure a third place finish for Stony Brook’s 1,600 meter relay team showing an equal strength as a sprinter.
