The 1992-93 Bears

On this day 25 years ago, the boys’ basketball team clinched the League VIII Championship with a 68-45 win over Port Jeff. It was the program’s first title since 1975 and the first of nine for coach Mike Hickey.

The Bears came out firing in the first half, hanging 40 points on the Royals to firmly grasp control. Jonas Fischer poured in 17 of his game-high 27 points in the first two quarters to lead the way.

The Bears led the league in nearly every offensive category that season, including average points (58.3), average margin (3.89), average field goals per game (21.83), and total 3-pointers (80) while having the 9th-highest winning percentage in the county (.722). Fischer (20.0 ppg) and Matt Mattimore (13.33 ppg) were named All-League and All-Conference. Fischer was the 9th-highest scorer in Suffolk (360 points) and 7th in free throws made (91), while Mattimore was 6th in the county in 3-pointers (43), including a seven 3-pointer game against Mercy which tied the county record. Nils Brownworth (9.72 ppg) was the Bears’ 3rd All-League selection.

The Bears would repeat as League Champions in 1993-94.
