Bears’ Defense Sinks Whalers

February 8, 2011

The boys’ basketball team improved to 10-1 in league play, remaining in a tie for first place with Greenport, with a 56-30 victory over Pierson. The Bears last saw the Whalers on January 11th, downing them 59-47 in the cozy confines of Pierson’s gymnasium. On this night the Whalers hung around for the first ten minutes of play, but the defensive pressure by the Blue and White struck them a blow they could not recover from.

1st Quarter

Tim Pandolfi got the scoring started by stroking a 3-pointer from the corner. Pierson responded with an 8-2 run that left the Bears down 5-8. A score by Farqu Taylor and two free throws by Marco Masakayan gave the home team a slight edge at the quarter’s end, but they knew they would have to raise their level of play going forward. | 9-8

2nd Quarter

The Brookers came out of the interim with more energy as Forrest Hull, Pandolfi, and Kai Strachan each converted a layup for a quick 6-0 spurt. After back-to-back scores by the Whalers, the defense ignited a 14-0 run that left the Bears up 29-12. The hosts stole the ball five times during the stretch leading to four fast break layups and a pair of free throws. Pierson simply could not get comfortable amid the constant harassment leveled by Richie Armand, Masakayan, and Pandolfi. The run gave the boys a comfortable lead going into the break and proved once again that excellent defense leads to offense. | 36-14

3rd & 4th Quarters

The ten-minute intermission did nothing to diminish the Bears’ defensive intensity. The boys allowed just three points in the entire third frame to take a 43-19 advantage into the final quarter. The defense was so suffocating that the Whalers did not break out of the teens until 7:10 remained in the game. | 56-30

The Bears made sure they did not look past the Whalers. Pierson’s hustle and hard-nosed play make them a worthy adversary, but one that was no match for the Bears tonight. Once the boys committed to playing hard and intelligently on the defensive end there was little the Whalers could muster. The Bears return to action this Friday night February 11 at Bridgehampton @ 6pm.

The victory was the 234th of coach Mike Hickey’s career as he improved to 26-9 all-time vs. Pierson… Tim Pandolfi is 1st on Long Island in scoring with 27.3 points per game… The Bears have won six games in a row by an average margin of 30.3 points.
