Senior Trio Helps Girls’ Basketball Hammer Shelter Island

February 2, 2011

The girls’ basketball team downed Shelter Island this afternoon, 55-29, to improve to 6-1 in League VIII and remain in a tie for 1st place with Pierson/Bridgehampton. Again it was our senior trio leading the way. Brannon Burke led all scorers with 27 points while adding 8 rebounds, Jess Winston scored 15 and dished out 10 assists, and Natalie Istrati chipped in 11 points while pulling down 25 rebounds.

1st Quarter

Burke drilled her first of five 3-pointers to begin the game and Istrati scored a putback to build a quick 5-0 lead. However, the Indians showed they were going to put up a fight by scoring the next four points. Toward the end of the quarter, both squads exchanged the lead on four straight possessions before the Brook grabbed the lead back for good on a Winston floater that gave the Blue and White an 11-10 advantage. | 13-10

2nd Quarter

Midway through the second quarter, with the Bears clinging to a 15-14 lead, it appeared they were in for a tight battle. That is, until Burke took over. After a bucket by Istrati, Burke scored the next 9 points for the Brook, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that capped an 11-0 run and helped build a 26-14 edge at the half. Burke finished the half with 14 points and Danielle Pappas spearheaded the defense with three steals. | 26-14

3rd Quarter

Istrati and Winston each scored to extend the Bears’ run to 15-0. The Indians scored the next four points, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Winston all but broke their backs. | 41-21

4th Quarter

Burke connected on her fourth 3-pointer to begin the quarter, Winston followed with a trifecta, and Burke swished her third 3-point attempt in a row on a step back off of a ball reversal to extend the lead to 50-23. Madison Rylands, Tadiawa Madenga, and Mikaela Stiklickas provided a great effort in the closing minutes to complete a team victory. | 55-29

The girls were dominant against a team that lost by just 12 points to league co-leader Pierson/Bridgehampton. The Brook used their tenacious trapping defense and eight 3-pointers to bury a gritty Shelter Island squad. The Bears seem to be finding their form just in time for big rematches next week with Pierson/Bridgehampton and Southold. Their next game is this Friday February 4 at the Ross School @ 6:15pm.

Brannon Burke is currently 2nd on Long Island in scoring with 20.1 points per game. She is also 24th on Long Island and 10th in Suffolk County in rebounds per game with 6.4… Natalie Istrati is 25th on Long Island and 16th in Suffolk County in points per game with 16.4. She is also 4th on Long Island and 2nd in Suffolk County in rebounds per game with 12.4… Jess Winston is 4th on Long Island and 2nd in Suffolk County in assists per game with 4.3.
