
On this day 34 years ago, the boys’ basketball team withstood a furious comeback to defeat Eastport, 54-53, on their own floor. The Shrikes led 29-25 at the break after a a 7-0 run comprised solely of free throws. Two straight scores to open the third frame extended the spurt to 11-0 run and by the quarter’s end the Blue and white Held a 43-33 advantage.
Brad Hargrave scored to give the Brook a 12-point lead to begin the final frame, but ten unanswered points by the Ducks turned a comfortable win into a dogfight. Eastport grabbed its first lead since the second quarter when they took a surprising 51-49 edge. In danger of squandering not only a double-digit lead but also the game, the Shrikes bounced back. Dave Wilson connected on two free throws to take the lead back and Hargrave scored to push the lead to three. The Ducks cut the deficit to one but would run out of time as the Brook stole the victory. Wilson finished with a game-high 20 points while Hargrave added 13. John Scanlon and Mark Whitney added 8.
