On this day 18 years ago…

The boys’ cross country team lost their first dual meet of the season to Mercy by a sizable 35-22 margin, but after running to dominant victories in their next four races, against Pierson, La Salle, Hampton Bays, and Port Jefferson, the Brook had a great deal of confidence heading into the postseason.

In the rematch with Mercy in the Conference IV Championship, the Brook tied the Monarchs and won the title on a tiebreak in which our sixth runner placed ahead of Mercy’s last man. One week later, on November 6, the Bears faced the same field in the County Championship and ran away with the eighth title in program history and the first since 1988. All-Conference runners captain Jamie Hanley and Ben Scholl paced the team to victory. Joining them on the All-Conference squad were Chris Shaw and Michael Tesfaye. The Bears also won county titles on this day in 1976, 1982, and 1987.

The team had a cinderella finish to their 1992 season.
