Istrati & Boss Lead Volleyball on Senior Day

The Bears recorded their fifth straight sweep this afternoon as they felled Mercy, 3-0. behind scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-15. Seniors Natalie Istrati, Christine Boss, Emma Moley, and Jess Winston shone in their final regular season home game in Swanson Gymnasium.

1st Set

The Bears and Monarchs each secured a point to start the game, but after a service error by Mercy, Istrati ignited a ten-point run with her serve as the Brook secured a 12-1 lead. The Blue and White benefited from five service miscues from their opponents and solid attacks by Boss and Sydney Braat on their way to a 25-11 win.

2nd Set

Mercy grabbed the first point of the next game, but the Bears seized the momentum with four straight points starting with a well-placed shot by Rocio Larraguibel. The Bears still led 11-4 when Boss broke the game open with three straight aces to help build an insurmountable lead on the way to a 25-11 victory.

3rd Set

The final game of the match was very even in the early going. Mercy grabbed leads of 3-2 and 5-4, then tied the game at 8-8 before our girls took control. Two more aces by Boss and great defense by Istrati and Emily Stone helped the Brook vault to a 17-10 lead. Boss emphatically capped the 25-15 win by drilling the ball off the arms of two Monarch blockers and out of bounds.

Natalie Istrati had 19 aces and Christine Boss had eight straight attacks at the net for Stony Brook.

Impressions

The girls looked strong today. The defense looked great, allowing Mercy a run of two or more points just seven times over the three games, as opposed to our offense’s 22. They did a fine job of choking off a few potential rallies by the Monarchs and cruised to their tenth sweep of the season, improving their record to 11-2 (12-2). The girls finish their regular season on 11/2 @ Southold/Greenport before entering the Suffolk County Class C playoffs.
