On this day 20 years ago, the boys’ cross country team began the season against Mattituck. Despite having three runners sidelined with injuries, the harriers ran to a one-point victory, 27-28, over the experienced Tuckers. The team would go on to finish 7-1 and win the League VIII Championship. All-League honors went to Christian Pidoux, Chris Shaw, Ryan Pinder, and Benson Eu. Here is a recap of the meet from the October/November 1990 Stony Brook Bulletin:
With three men on the injured list, Coach Robin Lingle was a little concerned about how his somewhat inexperienced boys’ varsity cross country team would fare against Mattituck, last year’s league champs, in their first conference meet of the fall season. In keeping with the Brook’s tradition of excellence in cross country, however, the Bears stepped out ahead to beat their top competitor by one point. In their first season of running cross country for the school, senior Shawn Muncy, juniors Christian Pidoux and Ryan Pinder, and sophomores Chris and Nathan Shaw paced the Bears to the win.
