The girls’ soccer team began defending of their State Championship this afternoon at Mt. Sinai. With severe thunderstorms in the forecast, it was the Stony Brook offense that rained on the Mustangs as the Bears turned a 1-1 halftime draw into a 3-1 victory.
The turning point in the game occurred when Kelsey Wentling took the ball into the box and was pushed down, preventing a possible game-sealing goal with the Bears leading 2-1. A play that should have resulted in a penalty kick went uncalled and Wentling remained on the ground in pain from the fall. In the remaining twenty minutes the Brook played hard-nosed soccer, ensuring that the missed opportunity would not factor into the outcome. Michelle Hennessy scored 2 goals and added an assist, Rachel King had 1 goal, and Kelsey Wentling and Donna Liotine each contributed 1 assist in the non-league triumph. Danielle Pappas anchored the defense with 6 saves.
The girls will look to stay undefeated vs. Class AA Half Hollow Hills East on 9/20 @ 4pm on Fitch Field.
