Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ soccer team turned back Long Island Lutheran, 7-0, to stay undefeated in PSAA play at 9-0. The victory also clinched at least a share of a fourth consecutive regular season title, which they can win outright with a victory at Portledge on Friday.
Coach Tim Beirne started a full squad of seniors in their final regular season home match and they rewarded him with a 4-0 halftime lead. Kevin Kiprotich Kirui began the barrage with a shot that hit the keeper’s hand and bounced over the goal line at the 22:50 mark. Just over a minute later, Jadon Sung tucked home a rebound to double the lead. With 17:31 remaining, Lani Ajeigbe scored his first of three goals when he volleyed home a picturesque goal between a defender and the keeper, and Nicky Candela closed the first half scoring with a sliding goal at 11:08.
12 minutes into the second half, Dennis Yilmaz gave himself a Senior Day memory when he turned 180 degrees to fire a shot that lofted over the keeper and into the left side netting. Ajeigbe followed seven minutes later when he received a pass from David Chang and fired a rocket that glanced off the goalie’s hand and into the right corner. He completed his hat trick with one minute remaining on a gorgeous bicycle kick that brought the Buyers’ Park crowd to its feet.
The Bears are back in action on Friday when they travel to Locust Valley for a key Portledge Day match-up.
