Stony Brook Upsets Hampton Bays

Sara Kiernan made a three-pointer with 4:50 left to give Stony Brook the lead for good at 41-39 and the Bears went on to beat Hampton Bays, 49-47, in the Suffolk Class C/D final at William Floyd HS. The game was a rematch of last year’s county Class C final, which Hampton Bays won by 16 points.

“It’s great,” said Kiernan, who had 17 points and made four 3-pointers. “We’re a D school this year and the past two years, we’ve lost the C finals. This feels like it’s our C championship.”

Aimee Kuhn’s layup brought Class C champion Hampton Bays (12-9) to within 47-48 with one minute left, but Stony Brook’s Michelle Spurlock (13 points) sank a free throw for the final margin. Kuhn led Hampton Bays with 18 points. Rebecca Fischer had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Stony Brook (16-4), which will play Southampton in the Suffolk Small Schools Championship at 6:00 pm Wednesday at Longwood.
