On Saturday, Forest Kaplan-Walbrecht, Yinka Ashiru, Hayden Lomanto, and Sean Lim competed in the 5th Annual NYSAIS Wrestling Championship, held at Hackley.
While Lomanto (126 lbs) and Lim (138 lbs) each went 0-2 on the day, they gained valuable experience for future years. Ashiru medaled in 4th place, adding a strong finish to his senior wrestling season. He was unseeded in the 215 lbs field of seven and lost a close 7-9 decision to #3 seed Carlos Garcia (Horace Mann) in the opening round. The senior went to the consolation bracket where he earned pins over Nick Vlaston (Rye Country Day) and Colin Senate (Trinity) in 3:14 and 1:45, respectively. In the consolation final, he fell again to Garcia in 3:26 in a hard-fought match to take 4th.
Forest Kaplan-Walbrecht earned a 3rd place finish, equaling his finish from the 2020 Championship in the 113 lbs bracket. The junior was seeded 5th in the 138 lbs bracket and made quick work of Alex Rosenblatt (Horace Mann), pinning him in just 22 seconds. He pinned Mohammed Chowdhury (Trinity) in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals to #2 seed Cole Joseph (Hackley) in 5:27. Joseph went on to win the championship and Kaplan-Walbrecht gave him his toughest match of the day. In the consolation bracket, he earned two pins over Thomas McCuiston (Martin Luther) and #4 seed Nicco Slick (Dalton) in 1:11 and 1:20, respectively, to earn the 3rd place medal.
