The 1931-32 cagers

On this day 90 years ago, the basketball turned back New Jersey’s Newman School, 35-22.

Humberto Villa led all scorers with 13 points, while George Whitmyre added 10 and Warren Hershey chipped in 8.

Humberto Villa, diminutive Cuban pole-vaulter and cage star, proved his proficiency at basketball here today by leading the Stony Brook team to a 35 to 22 victory over the Newman School passers from Lakewood, New Jersey.
Villa was ably assisted in the one-sided victory by the able passing and shooting of the veteran George Whitmyre. Whitmyre tallied five field goals while Villa accounted for 13 points.
