On Saturday afternoon, the Northwestern University men’s basketball team upset 10th-ranked Michigan State, 64-62, just 13 days removed from letting the Spartans slip away with a 73-67 comeback win in Evanston. This time around, the Wildcats made the plays they had to down the stretch to earn their first win over a ranked opponent this season and leave East Lansing with their first victory since 2009.
Northwestern took the floor Saturday without Pete Nance, the team’s leading scorer, but jumped out to a lead that would hold up under several late surges from the Spartans. Chase Audige ’17 netted 14 points, which included a season-high four 3-pointers, while notching 7 rebounds, 2 steals, a block and an assist in 31 minutes. His final 3-pointer of the night pushed the Wildcat lead out to 57-52 with just 4:47 remaining and proved to be one of several keys plays that helped the visitors hold on.
Audige and the ‘Cats return to the court tomorrow evening as they welcome #8 Wisconsin to Welsh-Ryan Arena.
