The 1999-00 girls’ basketball squad

On this day 22 years ago, the girls’ basketball team held on for a 41-40 win over Southold in their league opener. The Bears used a 5-0 spurt to push their lead out to 41-34 with 1:30 remaining, but a 6-0 Settler run pulled the East Enders back within a point with just 25 seconds left. Despite the late surge, the Bears held on for the win.

Brooke Meserole led the Brook with 16 points and 6 rebounds while Carolyn Gilroy notched 8 points and 5 assists. Michelle Spurlock (8 points), Gwen Powlison (6), and Gilly Fell (2) rounded out the scoring.

The Bears went on to win their first of six League Championships in the 2000s.
