JV Volleyball Wins 1st Title

This afternoon, the junior varsity volleyball team capped an undefeated season with their first PSAA Tournament title in front of a spirited crowd in Swanson Gymnasium.

Erin He provided the Bears’ first lead when her kill gave the home team a 2-1 advantage. Knox leveled the opening set at 4-4, but an Ariel Yu kill ignited an 8-0 run that wrested control of the set. He followed with a kill and Yu kept the run going with a pair of aces as the Brook took a 12-4 advantage. With the Brook ahead 16-7, Ruth Stortz sent three serves over that the Falcons could not return, including an ace, to give the Brook a 19-7 edge. Kills by Irene Qin and Yu moved the Bears closer to the win at 21-9, and Julianna Sparacio fired consecutive no-returns before the Bears took the opener, 25-13.

In set two, Qin opened the scoring with a kill and from there the Bears never trailed as they decisively closed out their championship win. Regular season MVP, Chloe Feldman, followed with an ace and Qin added an ace of her own two plays later. Both teams traded points and the Bears led 9-5 when Feldman notched a pair of kills and He fired another ace to give the Brook a commanding 13-6 lead. The Falcons closed back to within 8-13, but a big Stortz kill ignited a 5-0 run that left the Brook ahead 19-9 and on the precipice of the title. Yu followed Stortz’s kill with one of her own and Gabriella Sun sent a pair of serves over that Knox could not return as the Bears pushed their advantage to 10. Knox rallied for five straight points, but a kill from Camilla Riggs stemmed the tide. A Yu kill moved the advantage to 23-15 and a Knox service error, their tenth of the match, ended the second set, 25-16, giving the Blue & White their first volleyball title at the JV level.

Following the victory, Yu was named the playoff MVP for her outstanding serving and play at the net.
