On Monday afternoon, the volleyball team continued their dominant reign with a 3-0 sweep over Portledge in the PSAA semifinals, vaulting them into a Championship match for a sixth straight season, including their trips to the Section XI finals in 2016 and 2017. The win also marked their 18th straight sweep of a PSAA opponent, their 32nd consecutive home victory, and their sixth straight playoff victory.
The Bears established themselves early in set one. A Niamh Scanlon ace gave the Brook an early 2-0 edge before a Lily Middlekauff kill was bookended by Gillian Bernier aces for a 6-1 advantage that propelled the Bears to a dominant 25-6 opening round win.
Set two was a different story as the Bears found themselves trailing 12-13. Consecutive Keegan kills gave the Brook the lead back at 16-14 and they would not look back from there. Middlekauff sent an ace into the deck for an 18-15 lead and Keegan registered a kill and an ace to push the edge to 20-16 before Ava McCormick notched kills for the 24th and 25th points to close off a 25-21 win.
In set three, the Brook grabbed control early thanks to a pair of aces from Scanlon and a Keegan kill on the back line. Four straight Bernier aces preceded a block and an ace from McCormick as the Bears surged to an insurmountable 12-1 lead. The Bears rolled from there and Middlekauff closed out the 25-3 win with consecutive aces.
The Bears are back in action this afternoon as they host #2 Long Island Lutheran in the PSAA Championship.
