Yesterday afternoon, on a gorgeous day on the Hollis Courts, the boys’ tennis team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 win over Staten Island Academy in the PSAA semifinals.
Though the score appears lopsided, several key matches hung in the balance which could have easily flipped the script in a spirited match. Jake Macaspac cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles while Clement Leung and Jonathan Hell dominated second doubles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The Tigers took the second singles match 6-1, 6-0, leaving two matches in play to decide the final result.
Enoch Guo won his first set at third singles, 6-4, and held a 5-2 lead in the second set before his opponent stormed back to knot the set, 5-5. Guo held serve to go up 6-5, then broke his opponent to win both the set and the match for the Bears as his teammates roared their approval. Jovan Haynes and Jaden Lee provided a thrilling finish to the afternoon as they forced a third set by winning their second set, 6-1, after dropping their first set, 1-6. They pulled out a raucous third set, 6-4, to cap the 4-1 win.
The Bears move on to face top-seeded Portledge in tomorrow’s PSAA Championship match.
