On this day 17 years ago, Caitlin Banks ’00 scored 2 goals to help lift the University of Virginia to a 12-9 ACC Semifinal victory over Duke.

Banks’ first goal came with 10:20 remaining in the first half when she drove from the top before tucking away a 6-2 lead for the Cavaliers. She pushed the lead to 11-6 in the waning minutes of the game when she found an open net that was vacated when Duke’s goalie came out to challenge a pass.

Though the Cavaliers went on to fall to Maryland in the ACC Championship, they would get revenge in a 9-8 victory over the Terrapins in the NCAA Semifinals. In the NCAA title game, UVA fell to Princeton in overtime, 8-7, but reached the mountaintop one year later, defeating Princeton for the title as Banks notched 4 points in the 10-4 win.

In 2003, Banks earned a place on the NCAA All-Tournament Team. She also finished fourth on team in scoring with 37 goals and 20 assists, notched five hat tricks on the season, and led team with a 53% shooting percentage.
