On Monday afternoon at the famed Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams successfully defended their 2018 PSAA crowns with an overwhelming show of force in the 30th Annual PSAA Championship.
Sarah Wong repeated as the individual champion, scorching the 2.5-mile course in 17:43 to best her 18:05 mark from last year and lead the team to the 13th title in their history. It was also the fastest winning time since Woodmere’s Nia Gibson ran 17:10 in 2014. Kew-Forest nabbed the 2nd spot, two runners from Avenues claimed 3rd and 4th, and Long Island Lutheran took 5th, but none of those schools had a full squad to qualify for the team score. It would not have mattered, however, as an impenetrable Stony Brook core secured the next five places to slot six Bears in the top ten. Evelyn Apazidis (6th/19:49), Yasmin Tinaz (7th/20:23), Diana Barbacena (8th/20:34), and Judy Tao (9th/20:36) scored for the Bears who became the first team to repeat as champions since Coumbia Prep won in 2008 and 2009. Maryana Lekanova (10th/20:50) and Ellen Tong (14th/21:28) earned All-PSAA honors by finishing in the top 15.
The boys nearly swept their race as well, racking up a scant 19 points to best Avenues (53), Portledge (73), Solomon Schechter (99), Long Island Lutheran (106), and Knox (115). Riley Corcoran joined Wong in repeating as the individual champion, running a Van Cortlandt career-best in 14:01, eight seconds ahead of his winning time from a year ago. His time was also the fastest winning mark since 2013 as he led the boys to a 66th title in team history. Colin Scanlon (3rd/15:06), Zack Xu (4th/15:08), Forest Kaplan-Walbrecht (5th/15:42), and Jerry Wan (6th/16:26) scored for the Bears while Jake Macaspac (8th/16:38), Nathan Freeman (9th/16:43), Pedro Gradvohl (10th/16:44), Frank Cheng (12th/17:12), and Emman Ajewole (14th/17:20) joined their teammates on the All-PSAA team. They are the first team to repeat as PSAA Champions since Long Island Lutheran accomplished the feat in 2015 and 2016.
