On this day 55 years ago, a pair of alums shone in the Big 8 Track & Field Championships held in Stillwater, OK.

Robin Lingle ’60 won the mile and three mile runs for Missouri in 4:05.9 and 14:26.9 to nearly topple the meet records in both events. It was a worthy encore to his performance at the 1964 Big 8 Indoor Championships where he won titles in the mile (4:10.0) and 1,000 yard runs (2:11.7).

Not to be outdone by his younger former teammate, Tonnie Coane ’59 ran a season’s best time to win the 880 in 1:51.1 in what the Great Bend Tribune called, “the biggest upset in the Jayhawks’ surprise conference conquest.” Coane’s title helped Kansas win their 11th Big 8 Championship in 13 years as the Jayhawks compiled 126 points to top Nebraska (105), and Missouri (86).
