On Wednesday afternoon, the baseball team topped Central Islip, 13-4, in their second tune-up of the spring, held at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank. One week earlier, the Bears won a seesaw battle with Port Jeff, 12-7, in their darkness-shortened opening scrimmage, and the bats picked up right where they left off.
The Bears took a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning, courtesy of a fielder’s choice and a pair of errors, then added six runs in the bottom of the 2nd, punctuated by RBI singles from Joe Wozny, T. J. Wachter, and Dan Rueda.
Wachter and Seamus Scanlon combined to hold the Musketeers scoreless through three innings, but the visitors finally broke through with three runs in the top of the 4th. The Bears answered with four more runs in the bottom half of the frame to all but put the game away. An RBI single by Wozny, a sacrifice fly from Wachter, an RBI double from Tyler Smith, and a sacrifice fly from Emman Ajewole provided the scoring. Islip added one more run in the top of the 6th for the final score of the game.
Ajewole led the Bear attack with 3 RBIs, while Joe Wozny (2), Wachter (2), Tim Wozny (1), Smith (1), and Rueda (1) rounded out the run production. Wachter (3 K), Scanlon (4 K), Rueda (2 K), and Ajewole (1 K) combined for just one earned run and 3 hits over six innings.
The Bears are back in action on Friday in a scrimmage at Port Jeff.
