Spooner defends during the 1968-69 season at the Brook

On this day 47 years ago, Harold Spooner ’70 set the single game scoring record for Houghton College with a 36-point performance vs. Barrington College in the consolation bracket of the Christian College Tournament.

Though Houghton lost 110-91, the sophomore’s 36 points helped him also set Houghton’s school record for scoring average in a season with 19.5. It was an impressive follow-up to his freshman season in which his 16.8 points per game led the team.

In 1974, Spooner was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, closing his career with 1,300 points. He remains in Houghton’s top 10 for career points and is a member of their Athletic Hall of Fame.
