On this day six years ago, the girls’ basketball team won the outright League VIII title with a thrilling overtime win over Pierson/Bridgehampton.
The Bears jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter, but the Whalers carved their deficit back to three at the half. An 8-6 quarter gave the Brook a five-point cushion heading into the fourth, but Pierson came roaring back in the final frame and held a two-point lead with 12 seconds left in regulation. With the outcome hanging in the balance, Keara Vancol connected on two free throws to send the game into overtime, deadlocked at 28-28.
In the extra period, free throws again proved crucial for the Bears when Allie Damianos connected on a pair to give the Brook a two-point lead with 35 seconds left on the way to a 35-32 win. Vancol finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Ariana Odom scored 3 points and pulled down 10 boards.
The win gave the Brook an 11-1 record for the season. Just six days later, the Bears topped the Whalers in a decidedly less exciting Suffolk County semifinal, 40-22. They went on to win a seventh County Championship in eight years.
