
On this day 20 years ago, the girls’ basketball team scored 22 fourth quarter points in a come-from-behind victory over Shoreham-Wading River in the consolation game of the Westhampton Tournament.
The Bears trailed 12-15 after the first quarter, but outscored Shoreham 16-8 in the second period to take a 28-23 lead at the break. A 17-12 frame for the Wildcats left the teams knotted at 40-40 entering the final quarter which the Bears won in a shootout. Rebecca Fischer and Sara Kiernan combined for 21 points of the Bears’ 22 points in the decisive frame to hold off the Wildcats.
Fischer led all scorers with 30 points and added 16 rebounds while Kiernan (15), Michelle Spurlock (8), Brie Edwards (7), and Gilly Fell (2) rounded out the scoring.
The Bears went on to finish the season as League Champions, their third of what became four consecutive titles, before winning the program’s first Suffolk County Championship.
