Yesterday afternoon, the girls’ volleyball team clinched their third straight finals appearance and remained undefeated on the season (12-0) with a 3-0 sweep of second-seeded Martin Luther.
The top-seeded Bears roared out to a 7-0 lead thanks to six points from Mercedes Alvarez on three aces and three service winners. The lead grew to 11-2 after an Ava McCormick kill and the Cougars did not get within more than six points the rest of the way. A Liz Robbins ace capped the 25-16 set one win.
In set two, Alvarez staked the Brook to an early lead once again as two aces and a service winner gave the Bears a 6-0 edge. A Bekah Detwiler kill and a Robbins ace pushed the advantage to 12-3 and Luther would not get closer than seven points the rest of the frame. A cagey kill from Robbins and consecutive aces from Alvarez left the Brook ahead 21-10 before a Sydnie Beausoleil kill closed the 25-12 win.
Set three was the closest game of the match as the Cougars gained their first lead at 0-1, though it would be their last lead of the match. A McCormick kill gave the Brook a 4-3 edge that eventually grew to 19-7 after consecutive Alvarez aces, but Luther showed tremendous fight with their season on the line. The Cougars clawed back to tie the match at 22-22, then again at 23-23, before the Bears grabbed the next two points to finally put them away, 25-23.
With the win, the Bears moved on to today’s PSAA Championship match vs. #2 Long Island Lutheran at 4:15pm. The match will be played at Long Island Lutheran due to predetermined scheduling prior to the season.
